Hello, we are Drexel’s Black Action Committee, a student organization that focuses on community service and activism in the black community. We are planning a visual campaign in response to continuous violence and injustice against our community and want as many to participate as possible.
If you are comfortable, we ask that you film a video of yourself (in landscape format) filling in the light script below and send the video to [email protected] with the subject “It Could Be Me”. The videos will be used as part of our response campaign and may be shared on our platforms such as Instagram, twitter, and our website. We encourage anyone who wants to record their video in their native language.
“Hi, my name is (1) __, and I am/you may know me as (2)___. What if (3)___? (4)___.(5).”
1) State your name.
2) You may identify yourself however you feel most comfortable, such as:
I am a college student
I am an essential worker
You may know me as the assistant of…
You may know me from…
3) You may choose any relevant scenario relating to police brutality or racism/profiling. Here are some examples:
What if I was unarmed and shot by police tomorrow?
What if I was murdered during my morning jog?
What if I died at the hands of the police before I graduated?
What if you were with me as I get pulled over and assaulted for “suspicion”?
4) After giving the scenario, you may end in a statement summing up the ideas behind the movement. Here are examples:
Why is it “All Lives Matter” when my black life doesn’t / when black lives don’t?
Why are corporations cherished over my life / black lives?
What form of peaceful protest would work then?
Protests only work when you’re white and armed, right?
What would you do?
If you are not Black or not POC, make sure that your statement reflects and acknowledges the difference in privilege.
5) Please end your video clearly declaring “Black Lives Matter.”
FULL EXAMPLE:
“Hi, my name is Taylor, and I’m a junior in college. What if I was unarmed and shot by police tomorrow, and they weren’t charged for it? Why is it “All Lives Matter” when my black life clearly doesn’t? Black lives matter.”
** "Hi, my name is Ann and I am a college student. What if I was shot dead during my regular morning jog? Why is it that my case would be taken seriously and solved quickly but it's controversial and debated for a black person? Black Lives Matter."
